Just wanted to pitch in that the bug is still present in kdm 3.5.1-1 in testing where it bit me on a recent upgrade. I tried just about everything: xorg reconfigure, fiddling with console-data et al, no luck. Given that gdm and xdm has keyboard input on reboot, and kdm had it provided I first boot
