It would sure be nice if the "show Desktop" widget (part of
plasma-widgets-addons) didn't need so much extra stuff installed. Maybe it
could be packaged by itself or as part of the base set of widgets that is
installed by default?

I have now found the ability to assign keyboard shortcuts to workspaces
beyond #4 using System Settings --> Keyboard & Mouse --> Global
Keyboard Shortcuts --> Kwin
So this bug report can be closed, I think.
