I agree; this is quite annoying, and makes kdm harder to administer.
We've passed this report to upstream, but haven't gotten a fix yet.

I suffer from the same bug reported by Martin Emrich. After loosing
connection to the imap-Server (in this case today it was a reboot) kmail is
not able to reconnect.
