I retested after blowing away my .kde* and .qt* files/dirs. Now when try startkde it stops at the following startkde: Running kpersonalizer... + dcopserver + kwin --lock + kpersonalizer --before-session then it hangs. Could it be something with locking? because now the defunct process I see is
