I have found an explanation: the error occurs when fils are accessed
though NFS. If I copy the same documents to a local disk, everything
works smoothly.

Well, I found casually the same problem while upgrading to current
version. At least for me I had an OOo instance running _while_ doing
an upgrade (oowriter), with both a .doc and a native document open.

ow I've re-setup the hylafax 'printer', which is listed as a PDF filter
instead of a fax (which would insist on asking for the fax# while that's
the purpose of the filter/gui) or the usual generic 'printer' icon.
Hope OOo is not going to try to become as too-smart a
ock 2.3.1 (installed via official tar(.rpm) ->
alien -> .deb) does not show this problem. Likewise OOo1.1.5.

When installing the package, postgresql postgresql-8.2
postgresql-client-8.2 postgresql-common ere pulled in, and this is
generally unappropriate (OOo clients
d as I switched mount opts from smbfs to cifs on a Etch node.
Don't know the internals of OOo2, but I think it shouldn't break grossly like
that (couldn't even save new docs -> "general IO error"), and error msg
should be more helpful.
