I see a similar behaviour described in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=534314#58
where it looks like the bug manifests itself on i386 but not amd64.
So if you're only able to run on amd64, that's a bit of a blocker for
reproducing the bug. ;-)
