I am also experiencing this problem from mutt. I also noticed that
launching 'soffice' from a bash prompt with the -no-oosplash switch
leads to the same error. It seems that oowriter does not suffer from
this problem.
To circumvent this issue, I removed the -no-oosplash option from
the file /
