I am postulating that this might have to do with the new OpenOffice
trying to find fonts to display characters that does not exist in
the chosen font.

ooffice started behaving strangely. In the splash screen, the status
bar progress doesn't move at all. I tried a strace, and found this:

I did an upgrade to a newer xorg version (almost 7.3, from suse
repositories) and it might have fixed the problem.
I can't be sure because it doesn't happen all the time, but i'm using
it for about one week now without any issue.
