I had the same problem, and found a workaround. Try to install
openoffice.org-base and see if that makes Mail Merge more useable.
Not sure what the correct solution to this problem is, maybe adding
openoffice.org-base as a dependency to openoffice.org-writer? I guess
this is up to the ooo-mai
