It is a sad but true fact that some people write silly make files which
don't respect CC environemnt variables and other such ways of specifying
gcc version. It would be nice if gcc were integrated into the
update-alternatives system, so that one

Gcc currently recommends automake, which is only provided by the very old
automake1.4 package. I think it should probably recommend automake1.9,
or perhaps automaken, which is provided by all the automake packages.
