Actually... That's not quite how it works. The "gcc" binary package
comes from the "gcc-defaults" source package, which bundles up the
Debian-recommended gcc default for each arch... 2.95 for most, 2.96 for
ia64, and 3.0 for hppa.
Pentiumbuilder probably depends on "gcc" to make sure you get a s

No it can't - it depends upon the gcc package. the only package which
supplies this dependency is gcc-2.95 hence the problem.
