I have tried downloading them from a different mirror with the same

Very bad idea. Some of us are behind a firewall that makes it
difficult to use standard ftp tools. Invoking ftp from an
installer script would only cause trouble. It should instead be done
like the nescape installer package where the software is downloaded
manually to
more partitions for Linux. Perhaps an tool like Partition Magic
could "shrink" your FAT partion, and you could thus get this setup
without touching NT.

re. The same problem applies to the site-lisp dirs in
/usr/lib. Maybe the Debian Policy should be extended to cover the
usage of these dirs.

The most important thing is that the shared directory issue is solved,
and this is best done by not compiling elisp files from packages
otherwise unrelated to emacsen.

st-inst scripts are
usefull for many purposes, but using them to execute a GNU emacs
and/or an XEmacs compilation on every package containing a single
elisp file is overkill.

e functional even if
the .el's are uncompiled. (Maybe the program should also include an
option for cleaning .elc's if an emacsen is uninstalled?)

eloper stated this policy in one of the many
discussions in comp.os.linux.development.apps. Look for a thread with
the subject "Real reason why RedHat won't ship Qt" in DejaNews.
I think their main objective is that they want to include source code
for everything in the distribution
the packages "claim" to comply with (according to the maintainer).
Now you are at it, I suggest that you also scan the archive for packages
that fails to include a "Section" and/or "Priority" field. It is far
too many, and it is quite annoying.

of a low quality distribution (even Redhat can do this right).
