FWIW the perms on /var/log/btmp on my boxes are 664:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp
Just to verify, I also experienced the same problem. Did you assign a

Looks like '/var/lib/dpkg/available' is the main culprit here. (I wish I
could test the same setup on a different filesystem like JFS though...)
