Just in case you missed that, dpkg will refuse to replace an existing
directory

The TeX Directory Standard (TDS) has a hierarchy also for documentation
files (TEXMF/doc). Historically tex-common ships a *directory*link*
/usr/share/texmf/doc -> /usr/share/doc/texmf
