The "problem" is that there are a lot of broken C++ code out there, and
gcc-3.0/libstdc++ is a lot stricter, so many things that used to build
will now fail.

Most likely you installed a package from redhat that is converted with
alien. afaik, that's a redhat library, not a part of debian.

indicate that it will indeed provide video timing (as well as other
interesting pieces of) information about your display hardware.
Is there a different PnP monitor spec that people are talking about? This
(the VESA spec) is what my monitor uses.
