If I'm not mistaken, the aforementioned patch [1] that introduced the
dpkg-architecture usage is also responsible for this debian dkms bug [2].
In the bug report for [2] there is a patch provided, but apparently this
has not yet been fixed in stable or testing/sid.

fwiw this problem seems to be introduced by a patch which adds the
dpkg-architecture usage:

The patch was apparently added to fix http://bugs.debian.org/554843
