Hi,
You were correct - it's video related. I've narrowed it down to the module
intelfb
doing 'modprobe intelfb' recreates the system crash.
I can't upgrade the kernel until i sort out an issue with root on lvm on raid
with the initrd image that gets built automatically with the 2.6.32
stock ker

Having recently upgraded the computer in question to udev 151-2,
the system now fails to boot. It gets as far as starting udev,
then the screen goes blank and the system hangs until a hard reset.
