it seems it was indeed caused by a bug in splashy or something else.

Looks like a bug in splashy, which was fixed in 0.3.13-5 about two days
ago, see #522104, #523187, #523449, #523823, #524275, #524276, #524286,
#524314, #524316, #524317 and #524433 for reference.

I had the same issue after upgrading a box from etch to lenny.
The cause of the failure is a mismatch between the english translation
messages and the mysqld binary. If I run mysqld by hand I get this
error:
Error message file '/usr/share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys' had only
