I've confirmed the bug still exists with the current GCC 4.0.1 in a

Package: atlas
Version: 3.2.1ln-15
Severity: serious
atlas fails to build from source because some memory inputs to an asm
statement are not directly addressable (whatever that means):
+ /usr/bin/gcc -o ATL_dgemvN_a1_x1_b0_y1.o -c -DL2SIZE=1048576
-I/tmp/buildd/atlas-3.2.1ln/include
