Sorry to bother you, but a lot of packages have switched to kernel
2.6.21 and 2.6.18 is no more very supported, I have some troubles
running it.

Ok, I could solve the problem.
Anyway the solution and the cause of the bug are still mysterious to
me...
Here is what I did:
1) cp /var/lib/apt /var/lib/apt_org [backup]
2) rm /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.* [remove the lists]
Now "apt-get update" works perfectly.

I just need to use "apt-get upgrade" instead of "apt-get update".
Now the strace is _much_ littler (25 KB instead of 11 MB uncompressed)
and can be attached!

I noticed that the new crash is due to apt and not to aptitude.

Hi,
after latest debian update apt is no more usable, it segfaults at every
start.
With an "apt-get update" it search the server for updates and download
them, but when it tries to access the package database, it segfaults.

Upgrading the kernel to 2.6.21 seems to have fixed this.
For me it's the opposite!
Now it crashes just after the upgrade process, when you press "Enter"
to continue!
