Something I haven't yet tried varying is the C compiler. I'm using Debian
gcc 4.7.2-5, which doesn't understand the -fstack-protector-strong option
that the failing perls are built with.

The patch in svn.apache.org r1455340 is not correct for Perl 5.10 due
to a slight difference in hash splitting logic. Full explanation and
revised patch now available on the RT ticket.
