xpdf as a rendering library was removed from Debian, with
the justification that a fork of this library, poppler, could be
used instead.
However, the command-line utilities in poppler-utils are significantly
different than those of xpdf and are
OK, I've gotten myself out of my predicament.
In a root shell launched using the Debian Lenny
installation disk Rescue Mode, I re-installed
grub-pc (because I had previously tried to recover
by downgrading to grub-legacy), then I typed the
following sequence of commands:
mv /boot/grub /boot/grub.s
After running upgrade-from-grub-legacy, my system
is unbootable.
I don't recall whether I saw such a checkbox, or if I
did, whether I checked it. So I am replying to this
bug rather than opening a new one on the chance
that this is the same issue.

many dependencies is a challenge. But when you are
successful, that is where Debian provides its
digikam 0.9.0 (final) is currently available in the experimental
distribution. I would suggest that you both upgrade to 0.9.0 and advise
if this issue is still a problem

As a heavy users of digicam (actually my kids, not me,
anyway...), we would lose a LOT more data from digicam
being removed from etch than from this bug.
It would be nice if 0.9.0-final could make it into etch,
but I have my doubts that it is possible at this point.

On testing, that work-around is not possible -
70 dependencies prevent upgrading python2.4-minimal
to 2.4.4-1.
So python2.5 still cannot install on testing.
