I'm having a similar problem, but instead of the grub menu hanging
around, the console is completely blank until X starts.
I'm using Intel graphics with KMS.
grub from unstable is working fine.

Try setting /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/videosink to ximagesink.
You can use gstreamer-properties from the gnome-media package to
configure this, or manually with gconf.

for me, so it's probably unrelated.

gnome-panel.

I have forwarded this to the upstream developers. I'm also lowering the
severity of the bug as it only happens if the icon cache is created a
bug, when using the logout menu, or
fast-user-switch-applet, the screen isn't always locked. It does seem to
work if I use gdmflexiserver to switch instead.
Curiously, the locking seems to start working after a little while, at
least with fast-user-switch-applet.
