his package in a long
time, and so I've only just discovered that bugs have recently been
filed against it.
If anyone has any tips on how to reliably reproduce this bug, I could
work on it over the Christmas period.

Odd that the package was included in Lenny despite the maintainer
marking a bug in it as grave and indicating that it should be dropped.
Bug #400797.
If it is to be kept, it should print a message suggesting resize2fs for
situations it can't handle.

It turns out that hal has a "configure" option for exactly this
behaviour, which makes the attached patch just two lines: one to switch
on --disable-acpi-proc in configure, and the other to add Recommends:
acpid to hal.
diff -ur hal-0.5.7.1/debian/control hal-modified/debian/control
--- hal-0.5.
is only 18k. Let's
make hald depend on or recommend it, and take out the fallback code
altogether.
