Rolling back to version 2.1.23.dfsg1-8 of
libsasl2-2

from snapshots.debian.org solved the problem for now.

I just finish a fresh reinstall of my system... after installing compiz, I
tried the classical 'compiz --replace' but I got an error about a 'ccp plugin'
it couldn't load.
The problem was immediately solved once I

All solved... upon reinstallation of kcontrol, /etc/hotplug became a
directory, and now there is no conflict with libsane. Probably it was
left there from some old and faulty upgrade or something...

Nop, there is /etc/hotplug.d/ directory but /etc/hotplug is actually
an empty file! Maybe this bug should be forwarded to kcontrol so that
they remove it from their package?
