when stuck during login, doing this on the console:
kill -SIGUSR1 $(pgrep -x lightdm-gtk-greeter)
...gets it going and login proceeds successfully.
The lightdm-gtk-greeter 1.8.2 seems to be stuck on a mutex (race condition
maybe??):
