I rebooted my system (several update/upgrade cycles since previous
reboot) and my problem seems to have disappeared. I do get the same warnings
messages related to some missing blab conversions, but now gimp seems to
proceed with it's work.

It seems I have the same problem. Gimp seems to hang forever when I
start it either from a terminal or from the menu. I read about
removing my personal GIMP configuration directory, but it didn't change
anything, and about removing libopenb

xpdf suddenly stopped working for me under jessie. Seems my problem must be
this same bug (I checked I have fontconfig 2.11.0-1). I have a 686 system where
the program seems to stall, and an amd64 where I get the message
