In my case, even after upgrading it continued to refuse to rebuild
until I manually blew away an earlier failed build in
/var/lib/dkms/openafs/ but after that, yes, it's back to working

Thanks for the suggestion.
I went back to kernel 5.8.x and reinstalled nvidia-driver (reconfigure
didn't work because I had broken the driver trying to fix it ...) . After a
reboot I had my video working again.
