We need to isolate which upstream commit caused the behavior change.
I've got other things to work on that are higher priority to me right

The issue seem to be still present in 4.9.110-1 but I have trouble to
reproduce it on a sid system running 4.17.8-1. So this might give us
some indication on a possible fix.
