The problem with maintainer scripts doing it is as below:
1. User runs apt-get update && apt-get upgrade to upgrade to squeeze
(this is likely to remove calendarserver)
2. User reboots the system. (this deletes the files)
3. Now user installs the calendarserver. But the files are already delete

part of the problem is still present/used outdated copy of nibabel which
is now a separate package in Debian... nipy upstream is working on
deprecating their own copy in favor of system-wide available nibabel

I've found the cause to be a broken link configured for the
"start_dir_right" parameter. Once the broken link was removed it had
no problem to start (with a warning for missing directory).
