The invalid conversion used to be a warning. I suppose gcc 4.4 is less
forgiving.
I am going on vacation soon, and my schedule is packed. I don't think I
will be able to take care of this bug before I leave. But it will be one
of the first things I fix when I come back in January.

Frans Pop gave me access to his hppa machine.
If I compile from full GNADE source (not using the GNADE dynamic or
static libraries), the code works.
With the dynamic library, I get a SIGSEGV, somewhere in the program
startup, before any user code.
With the static library, I get a stack overflow
