i have the same problem on ThinkPad T43.
First i was thinking this is problem with hard disk (i lost power),
but after running grub1 from pendrive, and manually
booting from harddisk everything works. I fsck everything
(including /boot ext3 partition),
and after reboot problem reapeared. u
