The attached patch works around the problem. A better fix would be to
use an input constraint or to just use the C doe and have the compiler
generate altivec code. Is there a reason the gcc 2.95 generated altivec
code needs to be used ?

I just had a look at grub version 0.97-16, and /sbin/grub-install is
still missing. This path is used by grub-installer in d-i beta 3, and
thus the installation fail. Adding a symlink in /target from
/sbin/grub-install to /usr/sbin/grub-install solved the problem.
