Here is a workaround that appears to solve all of the
problems I mentioned in the initial report. This
is necessarily specific to a Dell Dimension 8400 with
similar BIOS (mine is version A01 of 07/17/04).

IMHO the right fix would be to use --allow-unauthenticated instead
of --force-yes ...
