I tracked the issue down to
https://sources.debian.org/patches/libprelude/5.2.0-4/025-Fix-PyIOBase_Type.patch
Although the patch changes the content of
bindings/python/libpreludecpp-python.i, swig is never called during the
build to recreate _prelude.cxx.
The final package therefore acts
Package: python3-prelude
Version: 5.2.0-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
