Tested your patch on initramfs-tools 0.139 -- which conf/initramfs.conf was

Severity: minor
No gzip in /usr/bin:/sbin:/bin, using gzip
When COMPRESS=zstd is in the configuration file but zstd is not installed I get
the above error.
It should say "No zstd"
