It appears that I can save files in other formats (.doc, .docx, .rtf, .uot),
but not in .odt or .ott
I did not check other formats.

I seriously believe your "32bit computer" is a 64bit-able computer where
one didn't install/maintain it properly by (re)installing it with a 64
bit *operating system*.

so it might definitely be 32bit only. As I feared. Unfortunately
LibreOffice upstream does not support 32bit anymore, so anything bad can
sneak in there.

During each failed save attempt, an empty file appears in the directory
that I am trying to save in. The files have names like:
