update: I was playing with display settings a found that the wrong
graphics controller has been set for some time. I was incorrectly using
`VBoxVBA` which exhibits the problem after the Gnome 3.34 update.
Switching to the correct setting of `VMSVGA` resolves the problem.

i've found #941908 which this duplicates which was closed since the bug
was fixed as far as host installations are concerned, however it seems
no-one noticed the issue remained with (virtualbox) VMs?

Since the upgrade to Gnome 3.34 I no longer get a login prompt in a Sid
install within a VirtualBox VM. All I get is the background and a
cursor.
I reinstated from backup and found that I am forced to hold back the
gnome-desktop3-data package to the 3.30 version (
