Overriding dh_auto_test like this makes the build succeed:
dh_auto_test -- -C $(CURDIR)/obj-$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE)

eventually wanted to tweak the test timeout. The build fails:
dh_auto_test -O--buildsystem=meson
