Success! Booting up on the Dell U2414H now has the screen centered.
GUI windows and fonts are a little erratic.
a) tty1-6 now has smaller (regular) font
b) MATE Terminal, emacs and pluma have regular fonts
c) Xemacs, XTerm & UXTerm have small windows with small font

problem. Swapped for a more current unit (Dell U2414H) and screen is
nicely centered now.

I am still grappling with the problem of screen being off-center
although it is no longer 10% to left but 5% to right. My comments
within brackets ().
