Thanks for doing, and documenting, all this debugging!
Ok, it always runs the rsh-command, but if it outputs anything to
stderr, even a minor warning, it seems that alpine then gives up on it
and falls back to imap.
In my case, /usr/lib/dovecot/imap was displaying this, but otherwise
working:
imap(,)Error: net_connect_unix(/var/run/dovecot/stats-writ
Unfortunately alpine sometimes does not use rsh-command when configured
to do so, and connects to the imap server itself. I don't know why.
I had this working for some period of time as documented in my previous
message, and then it stopped working, though alpine is still at version
2.21+dfsg1-1
