i figured the line "PrivateDevices=\n" maybe cleared whatever value the
variable held before. maybe that used to be the case?

i do have erlang-p1-pam installed, and i do still have the default config in
/etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.yml
i'm not sure how i'm supposed to edit the file during the
apt-get install process. maybe that's not what's being suggested.

I see you have erlang-p1-pam installed, but if I understand you
correctly, at the time when your ejabberd fails to start you still have
the default config (ejabberd.yml) in place?
