if I remember correctly, it was me who recommended /var/ax25.
In this directory, we have data like mheard/mheard.dat, ax25rtd's data, node/
or pms/ -- but also axcall stores downloads in this directory.
=> It's a mix of data you may search in /var/lib, /var/cache or /var/spool ;
/var/ax25

Brian, thanks for raising this to our attention - that's helpful.
The reason that URONode doesn't line up with ax25-tools in this case is
that I was clearing the Lintian error "non-standard-dir-in-var", which
as you can see here [1] ax25-tools still carries. It has been raised as

ax25-tools still uses /var/ax25/* for it's data storage paths
yet uronode is looking for them at /var/lib/ax25/*
locate mheard.dat
/var/ax25/mheard/mheard.dat
