script (but no systemd unit just yet). Bugs of the original one are no
longer applicable, but since I wasn’t yet able to properly test it, this
issue may still be there.

Debian still provides a generic fallback for sysvinit scripts for
packages not providing a systemd unit like sphinxsearch.
The problem is that this fallback isn't aware of anything else like
"stop" and "start", i.e. systemd will only call sphinxsearch's runscript
with either "start" or "stop"
It's not in the main tarball, it's in the Debian deb archive:

(open the file with any archive manager not supporting deb packages,
then open the «data.tar.xz», you'll find it there).

Looking at http://sphinxsearch.com/bugs/view.php?id=2321 and the 2.2.11
vs. 2.2.10 upstream source releases, or the upstream git repo, I can't
find any signs that a systemd unit file was actually added to the tree
at all. Nor does upstream ticket 2321 appear in the changelog for
2.2.11.
