what advantage does your proposal offer?
logrotate intentionally renames the file in order to not break any
still to this file writing process.
If the issue is a program still writing to the logfile, I suggest
re(loading|starting) the process via the postrotate op

Maybe you should first copy the files to tmp files, then compress them,
then move them back.
I recall copying is an indivisible operation that would be safe to run
when other processes like apt are also running.
