you are right when considering all possible command line options to be
configurable.
When it comes only to setting a default interface, I'd opt for just checking an
appropriate environment variable. This is much easier to implement.
Third option is to use shell aliasing like
etherwake='

When you have a single ethernet device that is not called eth0 you must specify
the ethernet device name on the commandline to avoid errors like 'SIOCGIFHWADDR
on eth0 failed: No such device' This is anoying. the use of a configuration
