I could fix the python script on my debian stable machine today. In
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/speedtest_cli.py fix the following line:
> uh = urlopen('http://www.speedtest.net/speedtest-servers-static.php')
If you replace “http” with “https”, speedtest-cli is back in business.

I do not have any Python-style error output like Francesco, only this:

Please update a version in stable Debian, possibly moving it to
jessie-updates similar to other packages relaying on 3rd party unstable
APIs do. Example would be packages accessing external URLs on ongoing
basis, like video download
