Good news (bad for my self-respect): it was my fault as I forgot to add
"options thinkpad_ec force_io=1" in /etc/modprobe.d
Now thinkpad_ec loads (with warning) and so tp_smapi does.

Well, you are right, I used to add tp_smapi to my /etc/modules, however this
does not work: if I put tp_smapi in /etc/modul

I've had a tp_smapi module working for years on a debian/sid.
Recently I had to reinstall the whole system (hard disk crash).
