took a while to track down hence me raising this but with this package
installed pavucontrol is unusable along with all volume controls in xfce
removing this package fixes the problem - maybe we should consider
removing this package if upstream don't support it any more
my solution was simply to remove the package:
dpkg --purge gtk3-engines-xfce
Just to help others find the issue these are the errors on the console
when running pavucontrol:
