I found the bug. Thanks all for reporting and help to find it.
After the last information that pointed to the correct position where
the bug happens, the problem was easy to find. There was even a patch
for it dated for 2014-06-17 from Michael Schwe

Hi Mattia,
It is a luck that you have one system where you can see the crash and
one where it don't. That might help in finding the bug.

Just for a comparison on package versions, this is from a system where
the bug doesn't show.

I just updated the system and I can still (actually I just opened geeqie
after a long time so I don't really know when it started) reproduce the
SIGSEGV.
I'll rebuild from source later, but just in case this is useful:

at the moment I still poke in the dark. I cannot reproduce what makes it
difficult to work on it.
Could one of you that have that bug, can try to reproduce it with a
fully up 2 date system? What I see is that all reporters uses an older
libglib
Same problem here.
I am attaching the result of running:
gdb -batch -n -ex run -ex bt -ex 'thread apply all bt full' --args geeqie
before removing ~/.config/geeqie and ~/.local/share/geeqie and after
removing them (and moviing to a folder containing images).
